Tips on Air Travel with a Baby?

Hi friends!

Next week we are going out to Utah and I'm so excited (I've never been)! BUT...I'm also a bit nervous. Our son, Julian, is 8 months old and my husband will be taking him on his flight out there by himself, and then I will be riding back with Julian by myself. Any thoughts on how to make the trip as smooth as possible, and in particular, what I can do to help my husband be prepared to go it alone on the flight out there?

Thanks so much!! :)

  1. One of the hardest parts about flying with baby, for my kids anyway, was the take-off and landing (hurts their ears). I always tried to have something for them to suck on, like a bottle/sippy cup, or a pacifier, even a candy sucker works.

  2. I can't tell you how many times I have flown across the country with my kids already. Unfortunately I have learned a lot of tricks the hard way. I think the biggest secret I learned was to check in at the gate as soon as the workers from the airline get there. Let them know you are traveling with a baby and ask if there are any open seats on the flight. If there are, they usually move your seat around to give you the empty seat next to yours. I have found that being able to carry the car seat on the plane (for the empty seat) or even having an empty seat to put my diaper bag on made a HUGE difference! I also found that by sitting at the very back of the plane was helpful in case I needed to change diapers. Plus the engine is really loud back there, so I think it helps the babies fall AND STAY asleep! 8 months is a tough travel age, but I'm sure you'll all do great!
